HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN CARAMEL APPLES

FUN, UNIQUE SAVORY CARAMEL APPLES

Every year since my children were little come fall I would order Abdallah Caramel Apples for family and friends. It is simply the best Caramel apple I have ever had. With the Halloween season coming up, the change in the weather and the yearning for something a little more sweet, these apples are a perfect treat. The only down side is that the Abdallah Caramel apples are only available for two months a year, September and October, so I have to move fast and stock up. After October I am out of luck, Abdallah Candies stopped shipping!  As I pleaded with customer service to ship me apples they very politely suggested I buy their caramel apple kit with the same creamy caramel they use for their apples and make them myself.

I wanted to do a blog about these delicious apples and how much I love them so I ordered the kit. As I was making them one morning I noticed bacon that was left over from breakfast sitting on the counter and thought hmmmmmmm. So I crumbled the bacon added brown sugar, crushed almonds and added fresh thyme and came up with a sweet and savory topping. I rolled the apple dipped in the warm melted caramel in the almond bacon mixture.  That burst of flavor in your mouth as you bite into the fresh, cool, crisp tart apple with the smokiness from the bacon, the earthiness from the almonds, the sweetness of the brown sugar and the essence of fresh herbs was a taste thrill for sure!

I was telling my co-host on Hallmark Channels “Home & Family” Mark Steines about my apples and that I was going to blog about it. He graciously offered to photograph the apples for me then chimed in and asked me to make him one with crushed potato chips and bacon! (What?!!) So I did and was I surprised, it was really good! You have the sweet creaminess of the caramel, the crunch of the salted potato chips and the crispy bacon that in my opinion was a real winner! I named it the “ROYAL STEINES CARAMEL APPLE”!

“THE ROYAL STEINES CARAMEL APPLES”

Ingredients:

Makes 4 caramel apples

Prepare potato chip mixture first

6 Slices of Bacon cooked crisp and chopped small

4 cups potato chips, preferably ridged, crushed

In a small bowl add the chopped bacon, potato chips and mix them together, set aside

FOR THE APPLES

4  cold Green Apples

1 baking sheet lined with parchment paper

sticks for the apples

1 bag of Caramel Apple Kit (16 oz) or favorite caramels, prepare according to package directions

Dip the apples into the warm caramel then gently roll in the potato chip mixture and cover ¾ of the apple. Place on the cookie sheet with the parchment paper. Let caramel cool and set up 10 minutes

 

SWEET AND SAVORY CARAMEL APPLES

INGREDIENTS

Makes 4 caramel apples

Prepare Almond mixture first, set aside

4 cups slivered almonds chopped coarsely

6 Slices of Bacon cooked crisp and chopped small

1 tablespoon of brown sugar

3 sprigs of fresh thyme, tiny leaves pulled off (Chopped)

In a bowl add the almonds, bacon, brown sugar and thyme mix well, set aside

FOR THE  CARAMEL APPLES

4 cold green Apples

1 baking sheet lined with parchment paper

sticks for apples

1 bag of Caramel Apple Kit (16 oz.) or favorite caramels and prepare according to package directions

In a bowl add the almonds, bacon, brown sugar and thyme mix well

Pour onto a flat plate and shake back and forth to even the mixture out

Dip the apples in warm melted caramel then roll in the almond mixture ¾ ways up the apple, place on the baking sheet to cool

Let caramel apples cool 10 minutes

Slice and enjoy!

The Royal Steines apples should be eaten the same day so the chips won’t go stale

The Almonds Apples can be stored in the refrigerator over night. Let the apples stand at room temperature after

removing from the fridge for 10 minutes to soften the caramel before eating!
